Build Confidence. Minimize Stress.

I empower students to take ownership of their college process and to engage deeply in the self-reflection, productive research, and informed decision-making that will lead to a positive admissions outcome and a rich experience upon college matriculation.

Katie Ryan’s Background

I launched KAR Consulting after leading college counseling programs in private schools for three decades. I love working with young people during the exciting time of transition from high school to college.

My college admissions career began in 1988 at my alma mater, Occidental College in Los Angeles, where I recruited and interviewed students, reviewed applications, and served on the admissions committee. At Oxy, I discovered my passion for helping young people launch themselves into rewarding experiences in higher education.

During my 10 years at Cate School in Carpinteria, California and my 24 years at Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, Washington, I guided over 1,000 students and their families through the college admissions process.  I have worked with athletes, artists, musicians, students with learning and mental health challenges, academic superstars, and students with a wide range of interests and goals.  I understand teenagers, and I enjoy connecting with them.

During my long career, I have also visited hundreds of college campuses and developed numerous contacts in the profession. I have extensive and nuanced knowledge of the national college admissions landscape.

Let me use my expertise to guide your student toward a successful college search and application process while building their confidence and self-awareness.

I have a dedicated yoga practice, and my college counseling is infused with tools for calming the mind and building self-awareness that I’ve learned from yoga. I also enjoy playing golf, stand-up paddle boarding, hiking, cooking, travel, and reading. I have a husband who is an independent school administrator and two adult children, a daughter in Berlin, Germany and a son in Portland, Oregon.
